The Melodeers Chorus is one of over 600 choruses of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide, non-profit organization dedicated to women’s four-part a capella, barbershop style harmony. Under the leadership of Master Director 700, Jim Arns and Associate Director and Choreographer, Renee Porzel, Chicago's Melodeers chorus have earned seven international gold medals.
Their trademark is a combination of an exemplary musical product, crowd-pleasing choreography, and stunning, innovative costuming.
The Melodeers marvelous sense of humor and ‘pushing the envelope’ style keeps audiences laughing and crying from coast to coast.
In international competition in Baltimore, Maryland, 2014 the Melodeers distinguished themselves as the first Sweet Adelines International Chorus ever to win seven gold medals. They are honored to have achieved record-breaking scores in Sweet Adelines International competition, setting a new standard of excellence in the world of women’s barbershop harmony.
The chorus draws its membership of 140 talented women from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. The Melodeers have been dedicated to producing the finest in four-part harmony since 1960. Our passion for singing compels us to drive from four states and a total of 21,306 miles each week – nearly the circumference of the earth – to rehearse with our world-renowned director Jim Arns. “I want each chorus member to have an intense, rewarding and fun experience”, explains Arns. “We gather each week to make the best barbershop sound we can, using and building our vocal skills, and having artistic abandon in making the printed page of music come alive through musicianship and showmanship.”
The unmistakable sound of The Melodeers Chorus has been captured on a popular series of CDs. Additionally, this talented group of women is available for professional engagements and performs regularly in the Chicagoland area.
